Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Logan Morrison isn’t happy with MLB’s decision to include New York Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez in next week’s Home Run Derby, and voiced his displeasure on Tuesday.
“Gary shouldn’t be there,” the Rays slugger told the Tampa Bay Times. “Gary’s a great player, but he shouldn’t be in the Home Run Derby.”
The 29-year-old cited the lack of homers from the Yankees catcher, who has 13 heading into Wednesday’s action.
“I remember when I had 14 home runs. That was a month and a half ago.”
Sanchez is part of the AL All-Star roster as the backup to Kansas City’s Salvador Perez, while Morrison wasn’t voted a starter by the fans or selected to represent the Rays in Miami. However, he is on the Final Vote ballot for the last spot on the AL roster.
Morrison does have good reason to question the decision. He’s is tied for third in the AL with 24 homers with the Royals’ Mike Moustakas, who will be participating in the event.
Aaron Judge, who leads the league in long balls, will be joining teammate Sanchez in the annual contest.
The Home Run Derby goes July 10 at Marlins Park.
