Mets lose reliever Putz for season

MIAMI — New York Mets reliever J.J Putz is out for the season.

The team said Tuesday night that Putz has been shut down after an MRI revealed “some new fraying and a slight tear” in his right forearm. The Mets said he will not need surgery and it is merely a preventative measure.

Putz was 1-4 with a 5.22 ERA in 29 games this season. His loss is only the latest blow for a Mets team battered with injuries.

New York also announced earlier Tuesday that ace Johan Santana will be out for the season and needs surgery for bone chips in his left elbow.

Putz is one of 12 Mets players on the DL, joining Santana, David Wright, Carlos Beltran, Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado, John Maine and others.
