Roberto Osuna pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit while striking out a batter for the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays Saturday afternoon in his first appearance on a mound since being arrested and charged with assault on May 8.
The Toronto Blue Jays closer is currently serving a 75-game suspension for violating the MLB and MLBPA’s joint domestic violence policy, but is eligible to be assigned to a minor-league team for 15 days during the punishment’s duration, according to terms agreed upon from the current collective bargaining agreement in regards to players suspended 51 games or more.
Saturday was the first day Osuna was eligible to begin his rehabilitation stint in the minors, and he won’t eligible to return to the Blue Jays until Aug. 5, as his 75-game punishment is retroactive to May 8.
The 23-year-old’s case has already begun going through the legal process in court, with the next hearing scheduled for Aug. 1.
In that same Gulf Coast League Blue Jays contest Saturday, baseball’s top prospect, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in his second rehab start as he continues to recover from a left knee injury he suffered in early June.
The Blue Jays ended up falling to the Gulf Coast League Yankees 2-1.
