CINCINNATI — Catcher Devin Mesoraco shagged flyballs in left field on Friday, trying to learn a position he hasn’t played since high school.
The Cincinnati Reds All-Star catcher went on the disabled list last month with a sore left hip that prevents him from squatting and will need surgery. Rather than have surgery now, Mesoraco has decided to try to play left field for the Reds, who lost left fielder Marlon Byrd to a broken wrist this week.
Mesoraco will go to the minors to play some games in the outfield before the Reds consider activating him and using him. He said the recovery time from surgery is four to six months, so he can wait until after the season to have it.
