Former Toronto Blue Jays infielder Tony Fernandez is reportedly showing improvement after being placed in an induced coma due to complications from kidney disease, according to his wife, Clara Fernandez via MLB Insider Hector Gomez.
The 57-year-old Fernandez was taken to a Florida hospital on Feb. 1 after developing pneumonia and was placed in an induced coma in an effort to stabilize him. Fernandez has been battling kidney problems for several years.
Fernandez spent 12 seasons with the Blue Jays winning a World Series title in 1993 and still leads the team all-time in hits (1,583), singles (1,160), triples (72) and games played (1,450). He is also fifth in franchise history in batting average (.297), fourth in stolen bases (172) and fifth in runs scored (704).
His defence also was a huge part of his game. He won four straight Gold Glove Awards with the Blue Jays from 1986-89.
Fernandez was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in St. Marys, Ont., in 2008.
