Joe Maddon is set to become the next manager of the Chicago Cubs, according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman.
Maddon will take over from incumbent Rick Renteria, who led the Cubs to a 73-89 record last season in his first season in Chicago, after opting out of his contract with the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.
The 60-year-old Maddon had managed the Rays since 2006, leading them to the American League pennant in 2008 and four consecutive 90-win seasons from 2010-2013. Tampa Bay went 754-705 under Maddon, who was named American League Manager of the Year in 2008 and 2011.
The Rays and Minnesota Twins are the lone MLB teams with current managerial vacancies.
