The Washington Nationals are informing opposing teams that superstar Bryce Harper is available for trade ahead of Tuesday’s non-waiver trade deadline, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
There is no indication the Nationals are committed to trading him or that any team has gained traction in discussions.
Harper is in the midst of a disappointing season by his standards, posting a meagre .220 batting average. Thanks to a National League-high 84 walks, his on-base percentage is still a lofty .369. The 25-year-old has connected for 25 home runs in 2018 and won the Home Run Derby earlier this month.
The six-time all-star is due to hit free agency at the end of the season and is expected to receive one of the largest contracts in MLB history.
Washington hasn’t lived up to expectations this year and sat six games back of both the NL East lead and second wild-card spot entering play Monday.
