Report: Nats interview Jays bench coach Hale

DeMarlo Hale coached on John Gibbons' staff in 2013 (AP).

DeMarlo Hale has once again emerged as a candidate to manage in the major leagues. The Washington Nationals interviewed the Toronto Blue Jays bench coach for their managerial vacancy within the last two weeks, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reported.

Hale impressed Nationals officials during his interview and is viewed as a viable candidate for the opening, according to Kilgore.

Nationals bench coach Randy Knorr, first base coach Trent Jewett, Arizona Diamondbacks third base coach Matt Williams and San Diego Padres front office assistant Brad Ausmus have also interviewed for the position, Kilgore reports.

Hale has interviewed for managerial openings with the Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners in the past.

MLB teams must interview a minority candidate for a managerial opening, but the Nationals did not seek Hale out strictly because he’s African American, Kilgore writes. The 52-year-old played and managed at the minor league level before coaching in the big leagues.

Hale outlined his daily routine to sportsnet.ca this summer.
