Dioner Navarro’s time in Toronto appears to be over.
According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, Navarro has agreed to a one-year deal with the Chicago White Sox.
Navarro’s departure leaves the Blue Jays without their two backup catchers from last season after the team non-tendered Josh Thole on Wednesday. The Blue Jays can still work out an agreement with Thole, who is a free agent.
The switch-hitting Navarro appeared in 54 games for the Blue Jays last season, hitting .246 with a .307 OBP, five home runs and 20 RBI. He also served as the primary catcher for right-hander Marco Estrada, who the team signed to a two-year, $26-million contract in November.
Navarro is the second catcher acquired by the White Sox this off-season after the team inked former Detroit Tigers backstop Alex Avila to a one-year deal last week. Tyler Flowers, Chicago’s starting catcher in 2015, was not tendered a contract on Wednesday.
The free agent market is thin at catcher, with the likes of Michael McKenry and Jarrod Saltalamacchia the top names still available.
