The Baltimore Orioles appear set to hire Mike Elias away from the Houston Astros to be the club’s next general manager. The news was first reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Elias, 36, is described on the Houston Astros’ website as “a driving force” in deciding to select shortstop Carlos Correa with the first pick in the 2012 MLB Draft. A Yale graduate, Elias began his career as a scout with the Cardinals before joining the Astros in 2012. He was promoted to Assistant General Manager in 2016 and has overseen player development and minor league operations ever since.

The hiring fills the last open general manager position in the majors, and likely signals Blue Jays vice-president of baseball operations Ben Cherington will remain with the team for now. Cherington’s name had been tied to the Orioles job, as well as the New York Mets‘ vacancy, but he didn’t appear to be eager to leave Toronto.
