Report: Yankees make strong offer for Orioles’ Machado

Check this out, as Manny Machado crushes two home runs against the Yankees to tie the game late, helping set up the Orioles for a walk-off win.

The New York Yankees have made a strong trade offer to the Baltimore Orioles for star shortstop Manny Machado, reports Jon Heyman of

Rumours surrounding the pending free agent have kicked into overdrive during the past week, with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers and Boston Red Sox reportedly also in pursuit. The 26-year-old is enjoying a monster season, slashing .314/.385/.574 with 23 home runs and 3.6 WAR, per FanGraphs.

Machado perhaps further boosted his trade value on Tuesday night, smashing two home runs to help the Orioles to a 6-5 win over the Yankees.

The Yankees boast one of the strongest farm systems in baseball and thus have the ability to outbid other teams for Machado. It’s not known what players were included in the reported proposal, but according to Roch Kubatko of, top pitching prospect Justus Sheffield was not included.

The Yankees’ greatest need heading in to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline is starting pitching. But with no clear ace available on the market, the club could seek to strengthen its offence, which ranks third in baseball, behind the Houston Astros and Red Sox.

Machado, who switched to shortstop from third base ahead of this season, has said he wants to remain at short. The Yankees appear set with Didi Gregorius at the position, but could try to install Machado at third if he’s acquired. Rookie Miguel Andujar has been a revelation at the hot corner for the Yankees, however his defence and plate discipline remain works in progress.
