Things are starting to heat up in the market for Bryce Harper, but no decision has been made yet by the superstar.
According to new reports from MLB Network’s Jon Heyman and USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Philadelphia Phillies are the front runners to land the outfielder. But Heyman also adds that the market is “evolving,” and Harper is evaluating multiple long-term offers worth more than $30 million a season.
While the Phillies remain the favourite for Harper, Heyman also reported that the San Diego Padres have made serious offers for the 26-year-old, as well as star shortstop Manny Machado. The offer to Machado is believed to be for eight-years and $250 million, while the Harper one is worth more, according to Heyman.
Harper and Machado, two of the biggest free agents in recent baseball history, both remain unsigned as teams begin gathering for spring training.
Their failure to find jobs before spring training has led to an outcry from major leaguers about the way teams approach free agency. But while there appears to be some movement in talks with Machado and Harper, the wait for them to sign continues.
