The Boston Red Sox have benched third baseman Pablo Sandoval for Thursday’s game against the Atlanta Braves, after the slugger admitted to violating the team’s social media policy.
Sandoval told reporters on Thursday that he “liked” a photo of a woman on Instagram during the seventh inning of Boston’s game against Atlanta on Wednesday night. He said he grabbed his phone on the way to the bathroom in the clubhouse.
Red Sox GM Ben Cherington and manager John Farrell both met with Sandoval, who apologized to his teammates for the incident on Thursday.
Sandoval signed a four-year deal worth $88 million as a free agent this past winter. He is hitting .270/.323/.409 with six home runs and 23 RBI in 59 games this season.
