DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Casey Fossum from triple-A Toledo on Tuesday.

To make room for Fossum, the team designated reliever Francisco Cruceta for assignment. The right-hander gave up the winning run in a 3-2 loss in Oakland on Monday night.

Fossum signed with the Tigers on April 8 as a minor league free agent. He has played for Boston, Arizona and Tampa Bay in seven major league seasons.

Fossum appeared in 11 games with Toledo, including four starts, and was 3-0 with a 1.96 ERA. He had 48 strikeouts in 46 innings.

Cruceta had a 5.40 ERA in 13 games for Detroit.
