ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Detroit Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya has tenderness in his upper right arm-shoulder area and will not be available to pitch for at least a few days.
"We’re hoping Tuesday he’s able to pitch," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said before Saturday night’s game against Tampa Bay.
Zumaya left a game on July 27 with the Chicago White Sox due to tightness in his right triceps. Leyland said the current problem is above that spot.
The right-hander was examined after pitching 1 1-3 innings in the Tigers’ 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay on Friday night. Leyland said Zumaya didn’t seem to finish some of his pitches during the outing.
Zumaya had off-season right shoulder surgery and didn’t join the team until June 20.
