Joe Mauer is one popular ball player.

The news about the Minnesota Twins catcher/first baseman’s retirement left the baseball world in dismay, and several MLB players used Twitter to pay tribute to the 15-year veteran.

The Twins organization published a letter, written by Mauer, in which he explains that his decision to retire hinged mostly on health issues, as he missed a considerable chunk of the 2018 season with a concussion after diving for a pop-up foul.

Mauer received recognition from other professional sports teams in Minnesota as well.

Former Twins relief pitcher Glen Perkins, who, like Mauer, grew up in St. Paul, MN, reminisced about the players’ high-school years.

Many other former and current major leaguers also expressed their gratitude to the Twins’ number 7.
