Watch: Former Blue Jay Brett Lawrie pokes fun at himself in gender reveal

Leave it to Brett Lawrie to always do things a little different.

In this case, though, it worked out perfectly.

Most baseball-related gender reveals are played out. There’s usually a player hitting a powdered ball and the colour that bursts into the air offers an answer to what sex the baby is.

But Lawrie, a former Toronto Blue Jays infielder who’s currently unsigned, wasn’t playing that.

The native of Langley, B.C., used the reveal — in which he saw blue, meaning he’s having a boy — to cleverly reference his infamous helmet toss incident from 2012.

Then with the Blue Jays, Lawrie was ejected during a game for arguing balls and strikes and immediately slammed his helmet to the ground. It ricocheted into home plate umpire Bill Miller and eventually landed Lawrie a four-game suspension, in addition to a video replay that he’s never been able to escape.

But cheers to the 28-year-old Lawrie, who last played for the Chicago White Sox in 2016, on his impending fatherhood and his ability to laugh at himself.
