PHILADELPHIA — Jayson Werth and the Philadelphia Phillies agreed to a US$1.7 million, one-year contract on Monday, avoiding arbitration.
The 27-year-old Werth hit .298 with eight home runs and 49 RBIs last season for the Phillies. He started 63 games, seeing most of his action in right field while platooning with Shane Victorino.
Werth likely will remain in that role, splitting time with newly acquired Geoff Jenkins while Victorino moves to centre to replace the departed Aaron Rowand.
Four Phillies players remain eligible for arbitration: first baseman Ryan Howard, right-handers Brad Lidge and Ryan Madison, and infielder Eric Bruntlett.
