The New York Yankees have declined the 2020 option of Edwin Encarnacion, making the designated hitter a free agent.
The Yankees also announced that outfielder Aaron Hicks‘ Tommy John surgery, which he underwent on Wednesday, “went as expected.”
Encarnacion was acquired by the Yankees from the Seattle Mariners on June 15 in exchange for pitcher Juan Then and cash considerations. The 36-year-old slashed .249/.325/.531 in 44 regular-season games with the Bronx Bombers, racking up 13 home runs and 37 RBI.
New York announced on Oct. 24 that Hicks would undergo Tommy John surgery and would miss eight to 10 months for recovery.
