Barrett, Wiggins headline Canada's Olympic qualifier camp invitees

Canada Basketball Head Coach Nick Nurse catches up with Danielle Michaud as the Canadian Training Camp roster is announced ahead of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Victoria, BC.

Canada Basketball has announced that 21 invitees will be attending camp for the senior national men's team from June 16 to 24.

New York Knicks guard R.J. Barrett, Memphis Grizzlies forwards Dillon Brooks and Brandon Clarke, Boston Celtics centre Tristan Thompson and Dallas Mavericks forward Dwight Powell, who are all currently competing in the first round of the NBA playoffs, have accepted invites to the camp.

Other stars like Toronto Raptors centre Khem Birch, Golden State Warriors forward Andrew Wiggins, Detroit Pistons guard Cory Joseph and Houston Rockets forward Kelly Olynyk will also be in attendance during the eight day training.

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Luguentz Dort, Indiana Pacers forward Oshae Brissett, San Antonio Spurs forward Trey Lyles, New Orleans Pelicans guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Golden State guard Mychal Mulder make up the rest of the current NBA players to accept invites.

Kyle Alexander, Trae Bell-Haynes, Anthony Bennett, Aaron Doornekamp, Melvin Ejim, Andrew Nicholson, and NCAA standout Andrew Nembhard round-out the invitees to the camp.

Bennett was part of Canada's FIBA AmeriCup roster that successfully clinched a spot in the 2022 AmeriCup.

Those who make the final roster will be competing at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Victoria, B.C. from June 29 to July 4, with a chance to play in the Tokyo Olympics Games on the line.

“Training in Tampa next month provides our team with a first-class environment that will allow us to safely prepare to achieve our goals at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament,” said Canada's head coach Nick Nurse in a release. “I’m looking forward to having the players and staff join me here in a few weeks and getting back to work.”

If successful in the OQT, this will be Canada's first Olympics appearance since the 2000 Olympics Games in Sydney, Australia.
