Saturday’s game between the University of Oregon and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in March Madness has been ruled a no-contest due to COVID-19 protocols, NCAA announced Saturday.
As a result, Oregon will be moving on in the NCAA Tournament.
The NCAA Division I men’s basketball committee said the decision was made in consultation with the Marion County Public Health Department.
Jeff Goodman, a reporter for Stadium, noted that VCU had multiple positive tests in the past 48 hours, which led to the decision to cancel.
“The NCAA and the committee regret that VCU’s student-athletes and coaching staff will not be able to play in a tournament in which they earned the right to participate,” the committee said in a statement. “Because of privacy issues we cannot provide further details.”
The No. 7 Ducks were favoured over No. 10 VCU ahead of the scheduled match. Oregon will face Iowa in the second round after the Hawkeyes defeated No. 15 Grand Canyon on Saturday.
