The Torono Raptors were looking to make a trade at Thursday’s NBA Draft but couldn’t get a deal done, general manager Bryan Colangelo told Brady & Lang on Sportsnet 590 The Fan.
Many, including Toronto’s front office, were expecting there to be trades within the first seven picks, and Colangelo says that the lack of early trades may have thrown off his original game plan.
"It made it difficult for us because we were looking to move around within that top ten as well, as the lack of movement kind of stagnated and I think it gave you a certain draft order…" Colangelo said. "If you can move up to get that No. 1 pick or No. 2 pick, that’s the intention."
Despite remaining in the eighth spot, Colangelo still thinks they got a valuable piece for the Raptors organization in Terrence Ross.
"Terrence Ross is going to be a very solid basketball player for us, he really does bring that athleticism that he talked about, he brings shooting, that much needed shooting on the wing and we’re looking forward to having a Raptors uniform on him," Colangelo said.
Colangelo also spoke about upcoming free agency and what the Raptors intend to do come July 1.
"We’re going to go out strong and hit the free-agency market on Sunday," he said. "Jose Calderon may or may not be with this club. I’ve explained that to him … I’ve explained that to his agent. They realize that there’s some fluidity there."
Colangelo also added that there is a strong possibility that the Raptors’ current starting point guard could be amnestied as part of their free-agency plan.
