LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Lakers centre Andrew Bynum is unlikely to play in the pre-season while finishing rehabilitation from surgery on his right knee.

Lakers spokesman John Black said Thursday that Bynum will not participate in basketball activities at the start of camp. The seven-foot centre will be involved in team meetings and film study, but will concentrate on his recovery from arthroscopic surgery nearly two months ago.

Bynum delayed his surgery to participate in the Lakers’ run to their second straight NBA title, averaging 8.6 points and 6.9 rebounds while starting all 23 playoff games. He then made a trip to South Africa for the World Cup, postponing his surgery for several more weeks.

The Lakers open training camp on Saturday.
