R.J. Barrett’s list of accolades continues to grow.
The Canadian basketball phenom has been named the Naismith High School Player of the Year for the fabulous season he’s enjoyed at Montverde Academy in Monteverde, Fla., averaging 27 points per game on 50.4 per cent shooting.
This player-of-the-year honour adds to a list of accomplishments this season that includes being named the No. 1 prospect of the 2018 recruiting class, a McDonald’s All-American, making the Jordan Brand Classic game and committing to Duke University.
A Mississauga, Ont., native, Barrett is the son of former Canadian national team stalwart Rowen Barrett. Last summer he led Canada’s under-19 team to a world championship gold medal and was named MVP of the tournament.
Next season, Barrett will headline a powerful Duke recruiting class that includes the No. 2, 3 and 12-ranked prospects Zion Williamson, Cam Reddish and Tre Jones.
Barrett and Jones are also top-three finalists for the Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award.
No. 1-ranked women’s basketball recruit Christyn Williams was named the Naismith female player of the year along with Barrett on Friday. She will be heading to UConn next season.
