Hornets owner Tom Benson owns the rights to the nickname Pelicans and has been pushing for a name change since purchasing the team April 14. The brown pelican is Louisiana’s state bird and appears on the state flag. Other names considered included the Krewe and Brass.
The team is also expected to change its colour scheme. According to the report, Benson’s wife, Gayle, told FOX Sports New Orleans recently her preference was navy blue, red and gold.
The Hornets moved from Charlotte to New Orleans in 2002.
