LeBron James named NBA 2K19 20th Anniversary Edition cover athlete

Sid Seixeiro explains why a piece of fruit has him believing that LeBron James will be going to New York Knicks next season.

Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James has been named cover athlete for NBA 2K19’s forthcoming “20th Anniversary Edition.”

Slated for release on Sept. 11, for those who pre-order the 20th anniversary, publisher 2K Games will give players access to the game four days early.

Additionally, this special 20th Anniversary edition of the game will come with a slew of extras including the following:

• 100,000 Virtual Currency
• 50,000 MyTEAM points
• 20 MyTEAM League Packs
• 10 MyTEAM Packs
• Five James-themed murals for MyCOURT
• A James MyCOURT design
• Nike James apparel and footwear

This will mark the first time James will be on the cover of the NBA 2K series since NBA 2K14. But as James was specifically named the cover athlete for the 20th Anniversary Edition of the game, it’s not yet known if the “standard” version of the game will feature a different athlete.

Along with the announcement of James as the cover athlete, the first official trailer for the game was also released Tuesday.

Curiously, despite his face being shown in the unveiling of him as cover athlete, James isn’t shown in any specific jersey. Currently playing for the Cavaliers, James can opt of out of his current contract and become an unrestricted free agent this off-season. So this is likely the 2K team covering their bases in case James does leave Cleveland, a scenario the team found itself dealing with when Kyrie Irving was traded from Cleveland to the Boston Celtics last year.

As the “20th Anniversary Edition” suggests, NBA 2K19 will be the 20th entry in the longstanding basketball simulation. It will release for the Playstation 4, Xbox ONE, Nintendo Switch and PC. The original entrant in the series, NBA 2K, came out exclusively for the Sega Dreamcast on Nov. 10, 1999, with Allen Iverson gracing the cover.
