Take one marquee trade chip off the market.

The Los Angeles Clippers guard will sign a three-year extension with his current team, according to a report from Yahoo!’s Shams Charania.

After the Clippers traded Blake Griffin and put the bat symbol out signalling a total overhaul, the team’s next best players, Williams and centre DeAndre Jordan, were expected to be on the move as well ahead of Thursday’s deadline as the team looks to re-stock for the future with draft picks, young players, and flexible contracts.

But now it appears as though Williams will be staying put— a move that makes sense given he provides fans with an exciting player to watch and a piece that could help bridge the new era Clippers while they reconfigure the rest of their roster.

Thirteen seasons into his career, Williams is in the midst of a breakout campaign. He’s averaging career-highs with 23.3 points and 5.3 assists per game while shooting over 43 per cent from the floor and 38 per cent from deep. He’s topped 40 points four times this season, including a 50-point performance in a blowout win over the Golden State Warriors in early January.

Williams is reported to be set to earn $24 million over the three years of his new deal.
