Raps’ Valanciunas named to All-Rookie Team

Jonas Valanciunas and the Toronto Raptors will begin their season at the Air Canada Centre with a showdown with the Boston Celtics.

TORONTO — Toronto centre Jonas Valanciunas has been named to the NBA’s all-rookie second team.

Valanciunas, a native of Utena, Lithuania, joined the Raptors after being selected fifth overall in the 2011 NBA draft and spending the 2011-12 season playing overseas.

He finished the season ranked third among NBA rookies in rebounds (6.0), blocks (1.26) and field goal percentage (.557). Valanciunas also ranked seventh among rookies in scoring, averaging 8.9 points.

He was named Eastern Conference player of the month for March, averaging 11.4 points, 6.3 rebounds and shooting .620 from the field in 15 games.

Valanciunas is the 10th player in team history to receive all-rookie honours, joining Damon Stoudamire, Marcus Camby, Vince Carter, Morris Peterson, Chris Bosh, Charlie Villanueva, Andrea Bargnani, Jorge Garbajosa and Jamario Moon.

Rookie of the year Damian Lillard (Portland), was the lone unanimous first team selection with 58 total points, while Bradley Beal (Washington) and Anthony Davis (New Orleans) totalled 57 points each. Rounding out the first team are Dion Waiters (Cleveland) and Harrison Barnes (Golden State).

Andrea Drummond (Detroit), Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Charlotte), Kyle Singler (Detroit) and Tyler Zeller (Cleveland) join Valanciunas as second team selections.
