Quincy Acy is no stranger to helping rebuild a program.
The Raptors rookie just spent four seasons at Baylor where he helped transform a moribund program that suffered a major scandal in the early ’90s into a perennial NCAA tournament team.
When he graduated last spring, his class of players was the winningest the program had ever known, having amassed more than 100 wins over their careers.
“That was the goal when I went to Baylor — to help turn things around,” Acy said.
In his senior season at Baylor, he averaged 12.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.
While he is known for his athletic dunks, Acy believes that his defence and athleticsm will help him make a solid impression with the Raptors coaching staff.
“I can defend. I know my defence is going to get me on the court,” Acy explained. “They already know I play hard but I need to show that I am going to play even harder.”
As a child he was a fan of Amare Stoudemire, but now as a pro, Acy has begun to pattern his game after a very familiar face to Raptors fans: Reggie Evans. In fact, with his shaggy beard, he even bears a striking resemblance to the Brooklyn Nets power forward. However, he didn’t grow the whiskers as a tribute.
“I started the beard when I was 13 and just kept it going,” he said when he was in Toronto for a workout last June.
Acy says he knows he has to adjust to “the speed of the game” as he moves from Baylor to the bigs.
“Everyone here is bigger, faster, stronger,” Acy said on Raptors’ media day.

Of course, Acy isn’t the Raptors only rookie for the upcoming season. Jonas Valancunias and Terrence Ross are also on the roster and Acy said he has formed a bond with Ross. The two have been in Toronto for a few weeks as they prepare for their first season in the NBA.
“Everybody’s getting adjusted but it’s fun to do together,” Acy explained.
Acy’s minutes have been limited thus far in preseason but the Raptors rookie believes he can be useful off the bench for his new team.
“I can be an exciting force off the bench. Complete. Be willing to do all of the dirty work and help put ourselves in the position to win,” he said.
Acy finally got his first real taste of action on Wednesday night, in Toronto’s second-to-last preseason game, when the Raptors held off the Milwaukee Bucks 104-95.
Acy was limited to nine first-half minutes but did manage to contribute three points and three rebounds; not a bad start for the rookie who earned some praise from veteran teammates.
“He plays hard, man,” Raptors centre Amir Johnson told the National Post. “Every time: He goes for every rebound. He’s kind of like a Reggie Evans. He’s more athletic and has a softer touch around the basket, which is good.”
