Raptors’ Nurse: Assessment of VanVleet’s injury might take ‘a little bit’

Paul Jones on Lead Off to discuss how injuries have affected the Raptors' play this season and why he thinks the team can contend for another championship.

In addition to sitting out Tuesday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers, Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet will have to wait “a little bit” before finding out the extent of his hamstring injury.

Raptors head coach Nick Nurse said ahead of the game that VanVleet hasn’t undergone any further evaluation and it’ll take the team some more time to assess his condition.

“I don’t think there was any testing today. He’s out,” Nurse told reporters Tuesday. “I think it’s going to be a little bit before we know exactly how long.”

The 25-year-old guard was listed as out for the game against Portland in the NBA’s official injury report on Monday because of the hamstring injury. He has also been dealing with a jammed right index finger.

The news comes after Toronto recalled guard Matt Thomas from his one-game conditioning stint with the Raptors 905, the team’s G League affiliate. Forwards Stanley Johnson and Malcolm Miller are also available.

VanVleet is in the midst of a career-year, averaging 18 points and seven assists per game while playing 36.3 minutes per night for the Raptors throughout his 31 appearances.
