Less than 24 hours after both players departed Toronto for Los Angeles via free agency, Ujiri issued the following statement:
This statement comes as a shock to absolutely no one, considering the lasting impact both players are bound to have in both the city of Toronto and across Canada for generations to come.
Both Leonard and Green arrived in a well-documented blockbuster trade with the San Antonio Spurs last July, then helped deliver the Raptors their first-ever NBA championship. In doing so the Raptors also snapped a 26-year championship drought by Toronto’s major-four sports teams. Prior to the Raptors, the city’s last championship was won by the Blue Jays in 1993.
Leonard led all post-season players in total points (732), minutes (939), free throws made (191) and attempted (216), steals (40), and ranked second in rebounds (218).
