Canadian Dwight Powell is expected to agree to terms on a three-year, $33-million contract extension with the Dallas Mavericks when free agency opens Sunday after 6 p.m. ET, reports The New York Times‘ Marc Stein.
Stein added Powell’s new deal was among the team’s top off-season priorities in addition to inking Kristaps Porzingis to a five-year, $158-million deal that will become official later Sunday.
Powell, a 27-year-old power forward/centre from Toronto, averaged 10.6 points and 5.3 rebounds on 59.7 per cent shooting in 77 games (22 starts) with the Mavericks last season. He’s also had back-to-back seasons with win shares over six (7.5 and 6.6, respectively).
