Dallas Mavericks big-man Dwight Powell will not participate in the FIBA World Cup for team Canada in order to focus on the upcoming season with Dallas, according to the New York Times’ Marc Stein.
The Mavericks' Dwight Powell is withdrawing from Canada's @FIBAWC team in China to focus on the upcoming season in Dallas, league sources say. Canada also lost the Knicks' RJ Barrett this week
Powell, 28, is a Toronto, Ont. native spent the last four NBA seasons playing for the Mavericks. In 77 appearances for Dallas last year, the six-foot-11 forward averaged 10.6 points and 5.3 rebounds, while shooting 59.7 per cent from the floor.
Powell joins fellow Canadians RJ Barrett, who withdrew due to injury yesterday, Tristan Thompson and Andrew Wiggins as NBA talent who will not be participating with the World Cup team.
Canada’s opening FIBA World Cup contest takes place on Sept. 1 against Australia.
