The Miami Heat have agreed to a long-term extension with head coach Erik Spoelstra, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowksi.

Spoelstra, the NBA’s second-longest tenured coach behind only San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich, was entering the final year of his current deal with the Heat. The 2019-20 season will be the 48-year-old’s 12th on the sidelines in Miami.

The Evanston, Ill., native has coached the Heat to a 523-363 record over his time with the franchise and owns a .602 winning percentage in the post-season. Spoelstra led the team to back-to-back NBA championships in 2011-12 and 2012-13 with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, as well as four straight NBA Finals appearances.

Since James left Miami following the 2013-14 campaign, Spoelstra and the Heat have been to the playoffs in two of the last five years.

The Heat enter 2019-20 with renewed expectations after signing coveted free agent Jimmy Butler in the off-season.
