The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to request permission to speak to centre Dwight Howard following the injury to DeMarcus Cousins, per The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Howard, who is currently a member of the Memphis Grizzlies, is expected to be released after he was traded from the Washington Wizards in July.

The veteran big man played for the Lakers during the 2012-13 campaign after he was acquired in a blockbuster deal in August 2012. Howard eventually became a free agent after the season and signed with the Houston Rockets in the summer of 2013.

Howard, 33, appeared in just nine games for the Wizards this past season, averaging 12.8 points and 9.2 rebounds in 25.6 minutes per game.
