The NBA is reportedly reconsidering a proposal that would have reseeded the four conference finalists during the playoffs based on regular season record, re-shaping the league’s playoff structure, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Zach Lowe.

Under the NBA’s initial proposal, which was part of a broader plan to adjust the league’s calendar and allow for a 30-team in-season tournament, the NBA was attempting to engineer the possibility for the two best regular season teams — no matter which conference they played in — to square off in the NBA Finals.

Many teams — especially those situated on the coasts — were concerned about the proposed change, citing the potential for increased travel time and the loss of traditional rivalries, Wojnarowski added, as the league’s official research has suggested that reseeding teams could lead to a 60 per cent increase in travel and result in one out of every four series being played across three times zones.

For any change to go through, the NBA needs two-thirds of both teams and the National Basketball Players Association to agree to the proposal.
