The NBA salary cap is expected to rise significantly in the coming years, ESPN’s Marc Stein reported on Friday.

According to league sources, the current salary cap of $63.1 million is projected to increase to $67.1 million next season, $89 million by 2016-17 and $108 million by 2017-18. The substantial rise is largely attributed to the NBA’s new nine-year, $24 billion TV deal, which will kick in after next season.

The luxury tax is expected to rise accordingly, jumping from its current figure of $76.8 million to $81.6 million next season, $108 million in 2016-17 and $127 million in 2017-18. Following the initial three-year increase, league officials expect the salary cap to hover between $100 million and $107 million until 2020-21, with the luxury tax between $121 million and $130 million.

The numbers could change if a new labour agreement can’t be reached before the 2016-17 season, according to Stein.
