San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is expected to sign a new three-year contract, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The new deal, expected to come once the 70-year-old “formally commits” to return next season, will keep Popovich as the NBA’s highest paid bench boss. Despite inking for three years, Wojnarowski reports Popovich will “continue taking his coaching future on a year-to-year basis.”
After San Antonio lost Game 7 of its first-round series against the Denver Nuggets Saturday, bringing an end to his previous contract, Popovich told reporters on Monday he was negotiating a new deal.
Currently third on the NBA all-time win list with 1,245, Popovich has coached the Spurs to a record-tying 22 straight playoff appearances and five championships.
