Fourty-one-year-old, 20-season NBA veteran Vince Carter plans on coming back for at least one more season.
In an interview with The Undefeated’s Marc J. Spears, Carter said he’s coming back and that he’s “90 per cent” certain the 2018-19 campaign will be his last.
“I plan on coming back next season,” Carter told Spears. “I plan on coming back one more season.”
“I just think that after next season it is time,” he continued. “It’s been great … maybe two more years. But, you know, in my mind, I think it’s time for one more.”
Carter signed a one-year, $8-million deal with the Sacramento Kings this season. In 57 games played, the former slam dunk champion averaged 5.3 points per game on 39.6 per cent shooting. Sacramento closes what ends up as yet another dismal season Wednesday night against the Houston Rockets.
An eight-time all-star, if next season is Carter’s last it’s likely he’ll be looking to head to a contender to chase the championship ring that has always alluded him after spending a season on a team that was never going to make the post-season.
There are a lot of possibilities for Carter, but an intriguing one, obviously, would be the Eastern Conference’s No. 1-seeded Toronto Raptors, the team he helped put on the map to begin his career. Toronto won’t have a ton of cap space to work with in the off-season as it’ll likely look to get point guard Fred VanVleet locked up for the long-haul, but if Carter were to take the veteran minimum (in the range of $2.3 million this season) there’s a chance it could squeeze him in.
