Kevin Durant sure sounds like a man who is tired of always being a bride’s maid.
The Oklahoma City Thunder star is the coverboy on this week’s Sports Illustrated magazine and professed his frustration with always finishing second.
“I’ve been second my whole life,” Durant told the magazine. “I was the second-best player in high school. I was the second pick in the draft. I’ve been second in the MVP voting three times. I came in second in the Finals. I’m tired of being second. I’m not going to settle for that. I’m done with it.”
You can chalk up another silver medal for Durant as he finished second last week to Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony in the NBA scoring race after winning the title for three consecutive years.
There are still a couple of obstacles standing in Durant’s path as he chases his first NBA title, the largest of which being the Miami Heat and LeBron James, whom Durant will likely finish second behind in MVP voting for the third time.
Durant will also be battling the infamous Sports Illustrated jinx. The magazine did a story on it a few years ago and at the time determined that, “in investigating virtually all of SI’s 2,456 covers, we found 913 ‘jinxes’.”
