In his lone season with the Raptors organization, McKinnie split time between the Raptors’ G-League affiliate, Raptors 905, and the parent club. The 25-year-old appeared in just 14 games for the Raptors in 2017-18, averaging 1.5 points and 0.5 rebounds in 3.8 minutes. The Chicago native found success with increased playing time in 35 games with the 905, averaging 14.0 points and 7.5 rebounds across 29.9 minutes.
McKinnie’s $1.4 million contract for 2018-19 would have become guaranteed had the Raptors elected not to waive him prior to Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET. Given the Raptors will most likely have to pay luxury tax penalties after next season, parting ways with McKinnie makes sense from a financial perspective.
After going undrafted, McKinnie signed with the Raptors as a free agent in July, 2017.
