It took Frank Mir just 100 seconds to show the MMA world he’s still able to compete at a high level. The former UFC heavyweight champion knocked out Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in the first round of their main event bout Sunday night in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
After a brief feeling out period, Mir began to establish his jab and followed it up with a quick left hook that dropped Silva. Mir then landed a series of punches and elbows to put his opponent away for good. The win snapped a four-fight losing streak. Prior to beating Silva, Mir hadn’t won since submitting Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140 in Toronto in 2011.
Meanwhile, Silva has lost three of three of his last four fights with each of those losses coming by knockout within the first three minutes of the first round.
In the co-main event, Michael Johnson continued to move up the lightweight rankings with an impressive unanimous decision win over Edson Barboza. Johnson has now won four straight.
Also on the card, Sam Alvey, Frankie Saenz, Marion Reneau and Kelowna, B.C.’s Matt Dwyer picked up big upset wins on a night where nine underdogs emerged victorious.
