Blue Jays promote Getz, release Storey

The Toronto Blue Jays released right-hander Mickey Storey to create 40-man roster space for Chris Getz, who was officially promoted Tuesday, as first reported by Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi.

Getz takes the place of Ryan Goins on the Blue Jays’ active roster and is expected to be in the mix for playing time at second base. The Blue Jays optioned Goins to triple-A Monday after he posted a .420 OPS in his first 60 at bats of the season.

Storey, 28, has had plenty of success at triple-A over the course of six seasons at the highest level of the minors. He has a career 3.32 ERA at triple-A with 9.9 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9, but faltered in four appearances with the triple-A Buffalo Bisons this year. He has a 10.80 ERA in 3.1 innings with seven hits, five walks and two strikeouts so far in 2014.

Storey, who pitched in three games for the Blue Jays in 2013, was claimed off of waivers from the Houston Astros in December of 2012.

Getz played 18 games with Buffalo this season, and he leads the team with a .309 batting average. He is also tied for the club lead with six stolen bases to go along with two doubles. The left-handed hitter should provide the Blue Jays with speed and contact ability at the bottom of the batting order.
