The CFL has suspended Saskatchewan Roughrider receiver Duke Williams one game after he ripped off the helmet of Toronto Argonauts defensive back Shaquille Richardson and threw it at him.

Richardson faces the league’s maximum fine, which is half of his a game cheque, for initiating a confrontation with Williams. The defender crossed into Saskatchewan’s territory during pre-game warm-ups and also later punched Williams during the game.

No penalties were called and both players who were allowed to participate in the game. Argonauts head coach Ryan Dinwiddie accused Williams of twice spitting in Richardson's face — during the pre-game incident as well as the second half.

“Such pre-game hostilities are unacceptable and the use of a helmet as a weapon is especially dangerous,” said CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie. “Neither is to be tolerated.”

Argonauts defensive lineman Eli Mencer also faces a one-game suspension for derogatory language directed towards an official during the same game.
