Former CFL player Garrett Marino says he's signed a contract with the United States Football League.
Marino took to social media to make the announcement.
"Just signed USFL Contract,'' he tweeted late Sunday night.
There was no indication regarding the USFL team Marino had been assigned to although his Twitter account did list the name of the Michigan Panthers.
Marino was released by Saskatchewan on Sept. 6. It came two days after he levelled Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros after he pitched the ball late in the Blue Bombers' 20-18 road win.
No penalty was called and Collaros remained in the game.
There were reports after Marino was released by Saskatchewan that CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie had issued a memo to teams saying if any signed Marino, the commissioner could refuse to register the contract due to player safety reasons.
Earlier this season, the CFL slapped Marino with three different suspensions totalling four games, the longest in league history for on-field behaviour. Marino was banned two games for a low hit on Ottawa quarterback Jeremiah Masoli, another for a verbal comment about the quarterback's heritage and one game for an illegal tackle on a previous play in the game.
Afterwards, Marino issued an apology for both the hit and his comments, adding he wouldn't appeal the suspension.
Following the Riders' 23-16 win over B.C. on Aug. 6, Marino was also was fined for unnecessary roughness against Lions offensive lineman Peter Godber.
Marino, 28, had one sack and nine tackles this season with Saskatchewan, his second with the CFL club.
