NORTH SOUND — New coach Michael Dighton got his first look at Canada’s cricket team in action, losing to the Windward Islands by nine wickets with 21 balls remaining Wednesday at the Caribbean Twenty20 Championship.

Canada scored 111 runs on seven wickets, while the Windward Islands counted 114 for 1.

Dighton was pleased with the effort of some of his younger players, and singled out the team’s top run scorer Ruvindu Gunasekera, who had 38 runs at the top of the order.

"A couple of the younger bowlers also managed to bowl a couple of good overs at a time when they lost all their momentum after the first six overs," said Dighton.

Johnson Charles scored 61 for the Windward Islands (1-1), which knocked off a heavily favoured Trinidad and Tobago side in the tournament opener on Monday.

Canada (0-1) plays again Friday against the Leeward Islands.

In March, Canada will be one of 16 teams at the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier 2012. Only two will move on to the World Twenty20 2012 championship in September in Sri Lanka.
