Hansra leads Canada over Scotland in T20 friendly

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Former captain Jimmy Hansra hit 65 not out off 33 balls to lead Canada to a six-wicket victory over Scotland in a Twenty20 cricket friendly Wednesday.

Both teams are preparing for the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, which runs Nov. 15-30 in the United Arab Emirates.

Canada scored 145 runs at the expense of four wickets in 19.2 overs Wednesday.

Ruvindu Gunasekera contributed 27 runs for Canada, partnering with captain Ashish Bagai for 20 runs for the second wicket. Bagai also shared a six-over 50-run partnership with Hansra to take Canada over the century mark.

Hansra hit six sixes.

Scotland replied with 144-5, with bowler Afzal Dean taking two wickets for Canada.

Six of the 16 teams will qualify for ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014.

Canada is in Group A in Abu Dhabi with Namibia, Uganda, the U.S., Italy, Hong Kong, UAE and current champion Ireland.

The Canadian men open Nov. 15 against the U.S.

The qualifying tournament has two groups of eight.

The group winners automatically qualify. The second- and third-place teams will play crossover matches with the two winners also progressing.

The fourth- and fifth-place finishers will also play crossover matches, with the winners then playing the losers of the second versus third crossover games. The winners will also advance.

Canada lost its tour opener to the Sinhalese Sports Club before bouncing back to beat the Ragama Cricket Club .

The Canadians head to Dubai on Saturday for warmup games against Afghanistan on Nov. 11 and Bermuda on Nov. 13.
