The 2022 European Curling Championships will no longer take place in Perm, Russia, as sporting organizations continue to pull out from hosting major events in the country in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine.
The World Curling Federation made the announcement Friday during an emergency convening joining UEFA, which withdrew May's Champions League final from the country, and Formula 1, which effectively cancelled the Russian Grand Prix scheduled for September given the current situation.
The International Olympic Committee has urged sports federations to cancel or move events scheduled to be hosted by Russia.
"The World Curling Federation shares the international community’s concern for the ongoing situation in Eastern Europe and together with the International Olympic Committee, strongly condemns the breach of the Olympic Truce by the Russian government," the WCF said in a statement. "The World Curling Federation works tirelessly to promote its values of friendship and respect through the Spirit of Curling worldwide and we hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to the current situation."
A new host has yet to be determined.
The WCF had announced Perm as the host for the Championships just last month, which were scheduled for Nov. 19-26, with president Kate Caithness saying they were "delighted to take another major event to Russia next season."
Sweden's Team Hasselborg was critical of the decision to hold the event in Russia and following the news Thursday morning of the invasion of Ukraine, second Agnes Knochenhauer said they would not compete in the event if was still held in Perm.
The European Curling Championships count as qualifying events with the top men's and women's teams securing spots for their nations in the world championships.
