Canada’s Universiade women’s curlers stay perfect

GRANADA, Spain — The Canadian women’s curling team wrapped up a perfect round-robin with a win over the United States on Tuesday at the 27th Winter Universiade.

Skip Breanne Meakin’s Carleton University-based rink put up a five points in the eighth to get past the U.S. by an 11-4 score, putting the finishing touches on just the third perfect 9-0 round-robin record since curling made its Universiade debut in 2003.

Canada will face either South Korea or Switzerland in the semifinal round on Thursday after those two teams play a tiebreaking match Wednesday to decide fourth place.

In men’s curling action, the University of Manitoba team skipped by Winnipeg’s Matt Dunstone was knocked out of playoff competition. Canada (5-4) followed a regrettable 10-3 loss to Sweden with a 7-5 win over Japan, but Sweden defeated the Czech Republic 11-3 while Great Britain got past Switzerland 8-4 in the final draw, giving both 6-3 records and berths into the semi-finals.

In men’s parallel giant slalom snowboard, Darren Gardner of Burlington, Ont., was knocked out by Andrey Pepelyaev of Russia in the round of 16 and finished ninth overall. Olivier Vachon of Quebec City was 16th and Jules Lefebvre of Montreal was 21st.

Megan Farrell of Richmond Hill, Ont., was 21st in the women’s event.
