Carey tops Sidorova in GSOC Masters round-robin

Moscow's Anna Sidorova fires a shot during the Grand Slam of Curling's Masters event.

Winnipeg’s Chelsea Carey improved to a 2-2 record at the Masters Grand Slam of Curling with a 6-2 win over Anna Sidorova during Draw 11 action Friday in Abbotsford, B.C.

Sidorova (2-2) misplayed her final shot in the fourth end to give up a steal of one and Carey pulled away stealing three in the fifth after Sidorova’s last shot rolled heavy and sailed past the button.

The Moscow rink couldn’t rally from a five-point deficit in the seventh end and scored only one.

Masters action continues on Sportsnet Ontario & Pacific at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT featuring Kevin Koe vs. Niklas Edin.

Sidorova held shot rock in the second end and Carey couldn’t get the final stone closer to the button to give up a steal of one. Carey rebounded with a deuce in the third.

Both rinks will play in the tiebreaker draw.

Elsewhere, Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton (3-1) scored a deuce in the second and a three-ender in the sixth for a 7-3 win against Sherry Middaugh, from Coldwater, Ont. Middaugh dropped to a 2-2 record.

Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin held the hammer in the extra end and made no mistake sending her last shot to the button and win 4-3 against Bingyu Wang from China (1-2). Nedohin dropped her opening-round match to Sweden’s Margaretha Sigfridsson but has now won three in a row to reach the playoffs.

Defending Masters champion Rachel Homan (2-2) earned a 9-2 win over Satsuki Fujisawa from Japan (0-4). Homan took command of the match with a deuce in the second, steals of two in the fourth and one in the fifth end and four in the seventh.

In men’s action, 2010 Olympic silver medallist Thomas Ulsrud’s tournament has come to an end with a 7-2 loss to Rui Liu from China.

Liu (3-1) scored a deuce in the second, picked up single steals in the third and fourth and padded his lead with a three-ender in the sixth. Ulsrud (1-3) opened the scoring with one in the first but the Norwegian skip managed to grab just another single in the fifth.
